JLM Community Projects

The Junior League of Memphis has started, coordinated, or contributed to many of Memphis' most worthwhile organizations. The number of community projects the Junior League of Memphis has been involved in over the years totals in the hundreds. We support a variety of needs, primarily those that benefit women and children in need.

2010 - 2011 Junior League of Memphis Community Projects

Agape Child and Family Services- Kids in Touch (KIT)  
$15,000 / 12 volunteers                                                                                                                             Volunteers serve as mentors to children in the KIT program, assist them with arts and crafts, plan and implement milestone activities and celebrations as well as provide meals to the families involved in the Families in Touch (FIT) and KIT programs.

Baptist Trinity Home Care and Hospice-Camp Good Grief 12  Volunteers                                                                                                                                           Volunteers help assist with organizing supplies for arts and crafts, recreation and other camp activities prior to the camp dates. During camp volunteers help facilitate activities and events as well as assist during the memorial service.

Extra Hands - Junior League of Memphis
$500 /18 Volunteers                                                                                                                           Volunteers lend a hand in the community and help with many activities including silent auctions, 5K runs, various benefits and events. Through the various opportunities, volunteers demonstrate the JLM’s commitment to the community.

First Works x3, Inc. - The Children's Program
$20,000/ 12 volunteers                                                                                                                           Volunteers work directly with children by reading to them, assisting with classroom lessons and homework, as well as help with craft projects related to the books read and offer one-on-one time with the children.

Girls Inc. of Memphis - Baby Think it Over                                                                                                  $17,500 / 8 volunteers                                                                                                                       Volunteers assist Girls, Inc. staff in executing a retreat for teenagers with realistic life-like babies. After ten sessions of Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy program, the teen girls gather for an overnight retreat to care for a realistic, life-like baby. Each teen cares for the life-like doll with the “money” to purchase clothes, formula, food, child care and transportation for those who work. The baby is programmed with realistic sleep cycles and cry cycles.

G.R.O.W. Memphis                                                                                                                                 $54,000 / 36 volunteers                                                                                                                            Thursday Supper Club - 18 volunteers                                                                                                       From August to May, volunteers serve weekly meals and hold classes for parents and their children. Volunteers work directly with the children while the parents are attending classes. These classes are collaborations with our local community partners and focus on various topics (financial literacy, discipline, education, advocacy, job skills, fire safety, cooking, etc.). 

Pre-K Outreach - 8 volunteers                                                                                                             Volunteers serve as guest readers, host special book drives and reading events with projects at the community center and schools. Volunteers work directly with the children and have the opportunity to be creative and flexible.

Saturday & Special Events - 10 volunteers                                                                                                 Volunteers host monthly Saturday morning and weeknight special events at the community center. Volunteers coordinate “Done in a Day” projects at the community center along with various other special events to take place at the center. Other activities include preschool programming, tutoring, story time, literacy projects, etiquette classes, school supply drives, clean up days, etc.

Hattiloo Theatre                                                                                                                                      $12,000 / 10 volunteers                                                                                                                             During June and July volunteers serve as tour guides Exhibit, pointing out significant facts, reading segments to the children, and posing questions for an interactive experience to help the children understand the context of the exhibit while bringing the inanimate displays to life.

Innovative Teaching Grants
$30,000 / 8 volunteers                                                                                                                            Volunteers review grant applications, select grant recipients, conduct follow-up site visits, and monitor the use of grant funds. This project is designed to improve the quality of life for children by encouraging and supporting excellence in teaching. The grants will enable teachers to implement original and creative learning experiences beyond the basic curriculum in school budgets.

Kids in the Kitchen
$5,000/ 8-10 volunteers 
Volunteers assist in providing opportunities for children to learn to make healthy snacks and meals, fun ways to exercise and many more tips on living a healthy, happy life. The KIK events include a variety of locations and audiences.

Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO) - Reading the Music 
$10,000 / 10 volunteers                                                                                                                             Volunteers help create and plan four interdisciplinary library events with MSO education staff and librarians to include craft/activity projects, hands-on preparation of crafts and event materials as well as attend and assist with the MSO Family Day.

MIFA - Urban Art House
$12,000 / 12 volunteers                                                                                                                          Working in threes on Thursdays, JLM volunteers work as facilitators for children in grades one through eight and help implement curriculum and then participate in the various art projects with the children.

Mid-South Food Bank                                                                                                                              
Food for Kids BackPack Program       10 volunteers                                           
Every week, volunteers fill backpacks with non-perishable food and educational materials including games and puzzles to help facilitate nutritional understanding for school-age children who are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.

Mid-South Peace & Justice Center
Grow Youth Market in the Mound        $12,500/ 8 volunteers
In addition to the set up and take down of the market, volunteers promote and assist with vendors. During the market, volunteers create cooking demonstrations about nutrition and healthy eating. Volunteers assist with loan administration to student growers, work in community garden and create a WIC subsidy program for WIC mothers to buy fresh produce with vouchers.
